Corrugated Printing with Water-Based and UV Ink Sets. Options for Numerous Applications By Melissa Donovan.

by Melissa Donovan

Water-based as well as UV inks are used for corrugated board printing, whether it’s multi- or single-pass. There’s been great advancements in ink chemistry over the years, which we discuss in detail in the September issue of Industrial Print magazine.

Here we share information on various ink sets.

Durst North America has a durable UV ink with great color gamut and excellent rub properties on corrugated board. It also offers full color with expanded gamut option and white, water-based inks. The inks meet the highest levels of industry compliance, with exceptional color gamut and yield for profitable production.

INX International Ink Co.’s BSR-06 UV and BECB-06 UV-curable inks are UV-curable ink sets formulated for use in the Barberán Jetmaster Series. They are formulated to achieve optimum dot gain and scratch resistance on graphic medias with the appropriate INX primers.

Koenig & Bauer Durst Water Technology inks are designed to save time as they allow high-quality, odor-free, and non-fading end products to be produced in a single process, eliminating pretreatment, interim drying, and overprint varnish. The ink set has a wide color gamut. There’s an option to add light cyan and light magenta, which reflects Durst’s heritage in wide format printing where light colors are commonly added to help reproduce skin tones and to smooth gradients. There is an alternative to the light colors with an option to add orange and violet, which can produce a wider color gamut and is more suitable for the packaging market.

Mimaki USA, Inc. offers three UV ink sets—LH-100, LUS-120 and LUS-150 with different ranges of flexibility and ability for post-process cutting. This stands out versus the one-size-fits-all approach of one ink. Some customers print pre-cut sheets while others print and cut using a CAD table, laser die cutter, or traditional analog die cutter. Sample and prototype printers might need a different ink set than traditional box printers. Having multiple ink sets optimized for different applications give customers a better choice.

Mutoh America, Inc. offers MP31 multi-purpose inks, ideal for proofing and prototyping, e.g. short-run work, with the primary goal of producing a real-world sample that will look and feel like offset lithography or flexography. The MP31 ink set can also be paired with UV to work in tandem and create embellishments, further enhancing the capability of the printer. Mutoh also offers various UV ink sets, with a focus on flexible formulations.

The development of innovative high-viscosity water-based fluids, such as Nazdar’s HighV Aqua Series ink, minimize absorption into the board to deliver superior color vibrancy and reduce overall ink usage. Since less ink soaks into the substrate, graphics printed in a single pass appear significantly more striking compared to those using standard-viscosity inks. This ink set is specifically developed for printing corrugates and designed to meet the challenges the corrugate industry sees today.

Sun Chemical has primers and coatings developed to work in conjunction with many digital platforms. The company works closely with many OEM suppliers to constantly improve performance and increase its assortment of color options for different print platforms. This ability to offer tailored solutions provides a significant competitive advantage for Sun Chemical and its customers.

artience (Toyo Ink America) Liojet FW-Series is a UV inkjet ink for extremely high-speed printing. Achieve high gloss image quality with CMYKVO extended color gamut that covers over 90 percent of Pantone colors. This UV series offers excellent printing quality, fast curing speed, superior rub resistance, outstanding press stability, and reliability.
